NHMA is partnering with the University of Colorado's Natural Hazards Center to sponsor a meeting on forming a new national mitigation collaborative alliance. Presenters from NHMA, NEMA, and FEMA will offer their perspectives on forming this new alliance as recommended in NEMA's recent white paper, "Recommendations for an Effective National Mitigation Effort." Participants will also be encouraged to offer their suggestions during facilitated discussions designed to flesh out details of the proposed alliance, its goals/mission, composition, actions, etc. This add-on session will take place 13-14 July following the main Natural Hazards Workshop held near Denver, CO. More information, including information about registration, is available on the Natural Hazards Workshop website.

The Center for Rebuilding Sustainable Communities after Disasters (CRSCAD) at the University of Massachusetts Boston has published their March 2010 Newsletter with many updates on rebuilding and recovery efforts in Haiti.

Several NHMA Board Members have been involved in an innovative pilot study in Tulsa, OK, to develop a mitigation plan that protects the city's unique cultural and historic resources. FEMA funded the study, and the final report will be submitted within the following months. Check out the related Urban Tulsa Weekly article and OETA news story!

Legislative Updates. We have put out our first Monthly Legislative Update Newsletter. The Legislative Update is intended to provide you all with a summary of major legislative actions being undertaken for the purpose of hazard mitigation. Although NHMA is not taking a formal position on these legislative items at this time, we feel it is critical that everyone be informed of what is being proposed. In the future, the newsletter will also feature new and innovative legislative actions being proposed at the state and local levels. The July 2009 Newsletter, and all subsequent Legislative Update Newsletters, is available in the Educational and Reference Resources section of both the Additional Resources and Resources for Members pages of the website.

Updates and Additions! We have added new position announcements to the Job Postings page. Some of these positions are open immediately, so please check out the latest job announcements! In addition, we have created an entirely new sub-section in the Resources for Members section of the site. The Educational and Reference Resources sub-section will contain essential information for professionals operating in fields related to natural hazard mitigation. Currently, this section contains three extensive bibliographies of suggested and essential reading on the subjects of resiliency and vulnerability by Richard L. Krajeski of Community Responsive Management. We intend to greatly expand this valuable sub-section of the site, and welcome suggestions from our membership on new resources to include under Educational and Reference Resources.

IBHS Says Assisting Vulnerable Populations To Prepare For and Recover From Disasters is Critical

March 24, 2009/TAMPA – The Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) today released a white paper to underscore the importance of considering vulnerable populations – including poor, elderly, disabled, non-English speakers, and others needing special assistance – in disaster planning and property loss prevention initiatives in high-risk areas.

News Release: New professional association formed to curb disaster losses.

January 30, 2009 (Kenner, LA) The new Natural Hazard Mitigation Association (NHMA) has been formed to support and encourage long-term actions to reduce disaster losses.

“Hazard mitigation makes communities and people safer from disasters,” said the group’s president, Jane E. Rovins, CEM, FPEM, a Florida-based hazards researcher and consultant. “NHMA is joining together people who are interested in building disaster-resilient organizations and communities.”

The NHMA has sent sent a letter to President-Elect Barack Obama on the subject of Natural Hazard Mitigation and Economic Stimulus. Specifically, the letter addresses the issues of failing infrastructure and the need to provide continuity of government following a natural disaster, and we suggest that these major issues can be resolved while facilitating the economic recovery of our nation. NHMA held its first official board meeting on November 10th, 2008. This meeting was immediately followed by a visioning exercise which covered a wide range of topics.
